February is Black History month, this is a time for reflection, celebration, and showcasing the accomplishments of Africans throughout American History. African Americans have, invented, built, and shaped the American landscape and its history.

Many of us remember growing up, our K-12 teachers dedicating lessons to the work and contributions to our society by notable Black individuals who have shaped our world today including:

Madame C.J. Walker (Beauty/Hair Care)
George Washington Carver (Agriculture)
Elijah McCoy (Steam Engines)
Frederick Douglass (Government)
Jackie Robinson (Baseball)
Sojourner Truth (Women’s Right Activist)
Aretha Franklin (Music)

These notable figures from our past, among many others, paved the way for equality and inclusion for current day notable African American figures. Oprah Winfrey (Entertainment), Colin Powell (Government), Rosalind Brewer(Walgreens), Rashida Jones (MSNBC), Cynt Marshall (NBA) & Harold Butler (banking).

President Obama, (the First Black United States President) described Black History month as an opportunity to acknowledge the often neglected African endeavors for the US.

Speech excerpt — Jefferson-Jackson Dinner — Nov 10, 2007 — Des Moines, Iowa

That the remembrance of Africans {sic} during the month acts as a way to give visibility to people creating change regardless of their ethnic background.

This month highlights not only the achievements of African Americans but also the advocates for civil and equal rights.

The DEI Committee invites you to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans this month and educate others on the rich history and contributions of our black brothers and sisters in America.
